Eczema, acne, clogged pores, the list of these unwanted visitors can go on and on. Some days we wish we could just get a paper bag over our heads and just walk around hiding these pesky visitors.
For years I have battled a less-than-cool combination of these visitors (trying anything and everything in the market). Because I have sensitive skin, I looked at natural products, high-end products, homemade products etc. My eczema flares would create a vicious cycle that would produce angry skin, clogged pores and occasionally acne!
Each Person is Different
While I wish I could write a post on the “miracle” product, I will be listing the list of culprits that could be flaring your skin creating all sorts of problems.
1. Touching your Face-
You are actually the guilty one here (I know I am!). We rarely ever notice how often we touch our face until we actually pay attention. I read that the average person touches their face 2-4 times a minute… That could be 5,500 times a day!
Not only is this aggravating our skin, but it is spreading unwanted dirt and bacteria (leading to acne, allergies etc.).
2. Sugar/simple carbohydrates
So this was an interesting thing to test. I noticed that when I had more sugar or simple carbohydrates, my skin was just overall more angry the days following my unhealthy food choice. It not only aggravated my eczema, but caused acne as well.
I’ve read that there have been studies that show a link between sugar and skin (since sugar leads to overall body inflammation). So if you’re trying to improve your skin, try eliminating simple sugars and carbs. Not only will your face appreciate it, your waistline will too!
3. Dirty Make-up Brushes and Sponges
Now little did I ever think about the fact that my own makeup utensils could be the very same culprits of my angry skin flares. I noticed this was a problem when I applied a solid foundation with a foundation sponge and got a cluster of hives.
I connected the dots here and realized I had to clean the very same tools I use (or get new ones) to prevent the spread of germs, bacteria and (in this case) dust particles that caused my skin break out in hives.
4. Overwashing Your Face
Now this was another big realization for me. Because my skin is generally so dry, I had to be careful what I used on it. Most face cleansers are actually too harsh and over dry your skin.
Dry skin can actually lead to ANGRY skin as well as clogged pores (dead skin cells will block them) and also acne.
In this case, I say be careful. Some of your cleansers though may seem like they’re targeting the things you’re fighting for, could be the very same things causing your angry skin.
I say go as natural on the cleanser as possible! You may notice a difference! (I started using the oil cleansing method and my skin drastically improved).
5. Dirty Pillow Cases
Now, I know I had never thought of this before but when I read about it, I had a total EUREKA moment! Not only do we spend a lot of time on our pillows, but we sweat, drool and leave residue lotions on our pillow case. Why had I not thought about this before?
This is a quite simple fix! Just make sure you change your pillow case at least every week or even every couple of days- your skin may thank you later!
Play Around With Things
My approach in everything I try to do is simple- try different things until you find what works. Think of our bodies like a very old and finicky radio that needs fine tuning and synchronizing to get rid of the white noise.
By trying new things, you can see what works for you and what doesn’t. I personally declared war on any skin problem I have and decided a long time ago to not let it beat me! Try the different suggestions and let me know if any of them worked for you! If you have any additional suggestions, I’d love to know about them too!
